Golemio – Prague Data Platform

Golemio is the City of Prague's integrated open data and analytics platform, developed and operated by Operátor ICT, a municipal company specializing in smart city and digitalization projects. The platform is named after the legendary Golem of Prague and serves as a vital component of the Smart Prague programme, which localizes the Smart Cities concept. Launched in 2018, Golemio has evolved into one of Central Europe's most comprehensive urban data platforms.

Golemio aggregates and processes data from various urban domains, including public transport, traffic, air quality, environmental monitoring, waste management, energy consumption, microclimate, street lighting, Wi-Fi locations, and USB charging infrastructure. Data is collected from municipal departments, city-owned companies, sensor networks—including smart benches and smart waste containers—and third-party sources. This unified infrastructure supports real-time visualization, dashboards, business intelligence reporting, and predictive analytics.

The platform was developed by the Data City Lab Department of Operátor ICT in close cooperation with Prague City Hall and the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR Praha). Golemio currently hosts over 120 active dashboards, supported by a team of approximately 25 data scientists. It serves multiple user groups: city representatives and policymakers receive tailored analytic web applications; municipal companies have access to business intelligence reporting with performance-based service level agreements; and the broader developer and research community can access data through a publicly documented REST API and the city's open data catalogue.

A distinguishing feature of Golemio is its commitment to open source. The platform's source code is publicly available on GitLab, promoting transparency, replicability, and community engagement. The open API provides real-time access to city datasets secured with JWT authentication, enabling developers and analysts to build applications, portals, and research tools on top of the platform's data.

Several notable applications have been developed using Golemio. The Pragozor portal offers citizens accessible public statistics about Prague, while Prague Pixels is a data sonification art installation that translates urban data into sound. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Golemio facilitated the development of response tools that supported the city's crisis management with real-time data on mobility, public space usage, and other indicators.

Golemio organizes the Prague Data Congress, an annual event that gathers city officials, data professionals, and international speakers to discuss the use of data in urban governance. The platform has received international recognition, including from the European Commission's Open Source Observatory (OSOR) and the SDG Local Action network, as a model for how cities can utilize open data platforms for evidence-based local decision-making.

The platform reflects Prague's broader digital strategy of employing data-driven tools to enhance urban management, improve public services, and promote transparency. By making city data accessible and actionable, Golemio positions Prague as a leading example of data-driven urban transformation in Europe, demonstrating how an integrated municipal data platform can support everything from daily operational decisions to long-term strategic urban planning.
