Quartier Böckinger Straße is a new residential neighbourhood planned in Zuffenhausen-Rot, in the north of Stuttgart, Germany. Its development began in 2019, and it became an official IBA’27 project in 2020. The project is planned for a site of about 5.5 hectares, with space for approximately 750 residents. 23
The project is led by Stuttgarter Wohnungs- und Städtebaugesellschaft mbH (SWSG), working with the Evangelische Gesellschaft Stuttgart e.V. (eva), which operates the existing Immanuel-Grözinger residential home for men experiencing social difficulties. The plan incorporates the home into a socially mixed neighbourhood of more than 400 dwellings. 23
The design places buildings of different sizes around a shared, car-free centre, with paths, squares and green spaces intended to support everyday encounters. Plans also include a neighbourhood meeting place and a children’s daycare centre. Flexible housing layouts are intended to accommodate changing needs over different stages of life. 13
Hild und K and Studio Vulkan won the urban-planning competition in 2020. A separate design for the neighbourhood centre and childcare facility was selected in 2021, by UTA Architekten und Stadtplaner and Koeber Landschaftsarchitektur. Completion is planned for 2027. 23
The project’s stated aims include improving local quality of life and the environment, exploring cost-conscious construction and timber building, and using green roofs and façades, trees and sustainable water management to help address climate change. 1
