NeckarPark is a mixed-use urban quarter taking shape on the former goods station site in Bad Cannstatt, Stuttgart. The City of Stuttgart acquired the site in 2000 as part of the region’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games; it had initially been intended for an Olympic village. The city is the project’s developer and organiser, with the Office for Urban Planning and Housing’s Department Urban Planning Neckar listed as the responsible municipal department. The official project page does not give a single formal founding date or identify an overall project leader. 1
The development covers approximately 25 hectares and is planned to accommodate around 2,000 people in about 850 residential units. It also includes commercial areas, an education centre, an indoor sports pool, parks, squares and streets. The long Veielbrunnenpark forms the quarter’s green centre, providing space for recreation, sport and play. 1
Some facilities are already in place: the Q4 and Q7 blocks were completed in 2019, together providing more than 18,000 square metres of office space. The former customs office’s Kulturinsel is another feature of the area; it has been an official City of Stuttgart “welcome space” since March 2018. 1
The city describes the project as “urban, liveable and sustainable.” Its energy plans aim to make greater use of locally available renewables, including solar energy, geothermal energy and heat from wastewater, while reducing energy use and local pollutant emissions. Affordable housing and attractive public spaces are also stated aims. 1
