Freihampton is a cooperative housing project located in the newly developed district of Freiham in Munich, Germany. Developed by Kooperative Großstadt eG, it was completed in 2022 as their second residential initiative. The project occupies a prominent corner at Otto-Meitinger-Strasse and Marie-Luise-Jahn-Strasse, comprising three buildings: two five-story apartment blocks and a community pavilion.
Designed to be inclusive, Freihampton offers 45 apartments in various subsidized categories, targeting residents across different income levels. The housing mix is complemented by around 250 square meters of communal spaces, including a centrally positioned pavilion. This pavilion serves as a hub for residents and is envisioned to eventually house a non-profit café, food-sharing station, or possibly other community-oriented businesses.
The project emphasizes community and sustainability. Shared garden rooms ("Gartenzimmer") and cooperative rooms support activities ranging from gardening to group work and social gatherings. Freihampton features a dedicated residence for seniors, designed to allow barrier-free and wheelchair-accessible living. Environmentally, the buildings prioritize the use of renewable materials and incorporate photovoltaic systems on their roofs, providing tenants with locally produced energy. Sustainable mobility is also encouraged with extensive bicycle storage, e-bike charging stations, and car-sharing spaces.
Freihampton showcases a blend of social integration, environmentally responsible design, and cooperative urban living, reflecting Munich’s ongoing efforts to address affordable housing needs with innovative, community-focused solutions.
